What is Female Hair Loss and how is it caused?
There are different types of hair loss that can be experienced by women, but the most common type by far is female-pattern baldness. Also known as ‘androgenetic alopecia’, this hair loss is typically inherited from one or both parents and can be triggered by hormones at any point following puberty.
The degree of hair loss may vary from thinning to almost complete baldness, impacting the front, top and the crown of the scalp.
According to NHS England, approximately 50% of women over the age of 65 experience female- pattern baldness. Many women suffer can also from diffused hair loss. If your hair loss is evenly distributed across the scalp, this is known as chronic telogen effluvium (CTE) and is linked to low serum ferritin levels. However, we have Florisene tablets for this type of hair loss.
Alopecia areata is another type of hair loss, typified by patchy loss of hair. Although the hair often grows back, in more severe cases the hair will continue to fall out in patches and may even result in hair loss in other areas of the body.
It is thought that alopecia areata is caused by the immune system attacking hair follicles and causing the hair to fall out.
Treatment for Female Hair Loss

Minoxidil - sold under the brand name Regaine - is often used by many women suffering with female-pattern baldness and has the advantage of not requiring a prescription to obtain. Regaine for Women Regular Strength contains 2% Minoxidil and is rubbed into the scalp once or twice each day.
Regaine for Women Once a Day Scalp Foam is a brand new treatment option for female pattern hair loss in women aged 18 – 65 years. Regaine for Women Once a Day contains a higher 5% Minoxidil, and may help to prevent further hair loss and can help to re-grow hair.
Moreover, although it is not licensed for this use, Minoxidil is often used by women who are suffering with alopecia areata, and may provide positive results.
There are also some brands of oral contraceptive pills that have anti-androgenic properties and therefore help in maintaining scalp hair growth, including Dianette, Clairette, Marvelon, Mercilon and Cilest.
