Dandruff
Dandruff is a skin condition (pityriasis capitis simplex) mainly affecting the scalp and that causes flakes of skin to appear in your head hair, which in turn often falls onto your shoulders and clothing. The condition isn’t serious but can be embarrassing for many.
Dandruff is a fairly common scalp condition that causes flaky skin and often an itchy scalp too. The condition isn’t contagious, nor is it life-threatening, but can lead to problems with a person’s social life and self-esteem.
The cause of dandruff is not related to poor hygiene, but may be more obvious if you do not wash your hair often enough.
Common causes of dandruff include:
- A yeast-like fungus (malassezia) that feeds on oils present on the scalp.
- Dry Skin.
- Irritated, oily skin.
- Sensitivity to hair care products (contact dermatitis).
- Shampooing too infrequently.
- Other skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis.
Many people wonder how to get rid of dandruff quickly. The simplest way to treat dandruff is usually through the use an anti-dandruff shampoo. There are several different types you can buy so it may be worth speaking to a pharmacist if you are unsure which one to get, which you will then be able to buy online from Medical Specialists®.
However, in general you should try to find an anti-dandruff shampoo containing one of these ingredients:
- Coal tar
- Ketoconazole
- Salicylic acid
- Selenium sulphide (or selenium sulfide)
- Zinc pyrithione
Anti-dandruff shampoo should be used for a period of about one month to see if your dandruff improves. If the first shampoo you try has no effect on your dandruff, you may need to try another type of shampoo to see which works best.
