Medical Specialists Celebrate 70 years of the NHS
6th July 2018
The National Health Service (NHS) turned 70 on 5 July 2018. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of one of the nation’s most loved institutions, to appreciate the vital role the service plays in our lives and to recognise and thank the extraordinary NHS staff who support and care for us. On 5 July 1948, the NHS was launched by the then Health Secretary, Aneurin Bevan, at Park Hospital in Manchester (known today as Trafford General Hospital). Our celebrations of the NHS turning 70 will look further into the future at the exciting possibilities being created by advances in science, technology and information. This is a future where healthcare is based around early detection and preventative care, where patients can access expert advice on demand, treatments could be tailored to an individual’s DNA or surgeries be carried out virtually from remote locations. The NHS employs 1.7 million people across the UK and deals with over 1 million patients every 36 hours. The NHS employs staff from all over the world and have 350 different careers. None of this would be possible without the skill, dedication and compassion of our staff, as well as the many volunteers, charities and communities that support the service. At Medical Specialists we feel the 70th anniversary is a perfect opportunity to reflect on the remarkable developments in healthcare and to celebrate the achievements.  In fact, one of our team actually volunteers at a local hospital as a radio presenter, and the radio station entertained the NHS staff, patients and visitors on 4th July to celebrate the 70 year anniversary. We can all play a role in supporting the NHS in this special birthday year. This could be by volunteering, raising money for local NHS charities, or by taking steps to look after our own health and use our medical services wisely. Medical Specialists are proud of our country's fantastic health service, and look forward to another 70 years of great care! We support the NHS' initiatives by helping to promote their annual health campaigns, with the latest one we have published is for National Smile Month, which was a campaign that aimed to encourage people to share positive messages and engage others in developing and maintaining a healthy mouth. Don’t forget, Medical Specialists can dispense your NHS Paper Prescriptions or your NHS Electronic Prescription (EPS), and more information about these services can be found on the Medical Specialists NHS page.
