What is Symbicort Turbohaler for?

Please note: Symbicort is sometimes prescribed by doctors as part of a Maintenance and Reliever Therapy (MART) treatment plan. If you are are prescribed Symbicort as part of MART plan, please provide details of this for our Prescribers within your consultation answers.

Symbicort Turbohaler is a combination inhaler used to control and prevent asthma symptoms, but can also be used by COPD sufferers.

Although this medicine is not suitable for people with severe asthma, it can be prescribed for asthma in two different ways:

1) Some people are prescribed two asthma inhalers: Symbicort Turbohaler and a separate ‘reliever inhaler’.

• They use Symbicort Turbohaler every day. This helps to prevent asthma symptoms from happening.
• They use their ‘reliever inhaler’ when they get asthma symptoms, to make it easier to breathe again.

2) Some people are prescribed Symbicort Turbohaler as their only asthma inhaler.

• They use Symbicort Turbohaler every day. This helps to prevent asthma symptoms from happening.
• They also use Symbicort Turbohaler when they need extra doses for relief of asthma symptoms, to make it easier to breathe again. They do not need a separate inhaler for this.

How does Symbicort Turbohaler work?

When you buy Symbicort inhalers, they contains two different types of active ingredients:

• Budesonide. This is part of a group of medicines called ‘corticosteroids'. This steroid has an anti-inflammatory effect as inhaling the steroid into your lungs causes a reduction in swelling and inflammation, making it easier for you to breathe.
• Formoterol Fumarate Dihydrate. This is part of a group of medicines called ‘long-acting bronchodilators’. It works by relaxing muscles around the airways, allowing them to open up and so you can breathe more easily, thereby preventing a possible asthma attack.

The long-acting relief from the Formoterol Fumarate Dihydrate should start to take effect in just a few days.  The preventer effect from the Budesonide could take up to around 2 weeks to noticeably reduce inflammation, but could occur within only a few days.

How to use Symbicort Turbohaler

As mentioned previously, Symbicort Turbohalers comprise of two active ingredients; Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate Dihydrate, and are available in strengths of 100/6mcgs, 200/6mcgs and 400/12mcgs respectively, per delivered dose.

When you buy Symbicort inhalers online, always use the medicine as directed by your doctor or asthma nurse, and as outlined in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL).

The PIL demonstrates clearly how to properly use your Symbicort inhaler, however, your own doctor should have explained how and when to use it.

It is important to use your Symbicort Turbohaler every day, even if you have no asthma or COPD symptoms at the time.

For asthma or COPD, the usual dosage is 2 inhalations, twice a day. However, this can vary depending on if you are using Symbicort as your only inhaler or have a separate reliever inhaler too. What are the possible side effects of Symbicort Turbohaler?

Side effects are rare, and most people don’t get any. Possible side effects may vary from one person to the next with any medication. You should always read the manufacturer’s Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) before using this or any other medication.
