The digestive system is made up of the digestive tract and other organs that help the body break down and absorb food.
Bowel is the general term for the long muscular tube that starts at the bottom of the stomach and ends at the anus. The first part of the bowel is involved with the digestion of food and is known as the 'small bowel' because the tube is narrower here.
The 'large bowel' is responsible mostly for absorbing water from the faeces.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Irritable bowel syndrome is a common condition of the digestive system and can cause cramps, bloating, and sometimes bouts of diarrhoea and constipation. Symptoms tend to come and go. There is no cure for IBS, but symptoms can often be eased with treatment.
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth is a disorder of excessive bacterial growth in the small intestine. Unlike the colon (or large bowel), which is rich with bacteria, the small bowel usually has fewer than 104 organisms per millilitre. Patients with bacterial overgrowth typically develop symptoms including nausea, bloating, vomiting, diarrhoea, malnutrition, weight loss and malabsorption.
