What is Qvar aerosol beclometasone?
Qvar aerosol contains beclometasone dipropionate, which is one of a group of medicines known as corticosteroids.
Qvar aerosol is used to prevent the symptoms of mild, moderate, or severe asthma, in patients who require regular treatment.
After you use Qvar inhaler, it gets into the cells in the airways and reduces the inflammation which in turn reduces the risk of having asthma symptoms. It works directly in the lungs to make breathing easier by reducing the irritation and swelling of the airways. This medication must be used regularly to prevent breathing problems or asthma attacks (wheezing/shortness of breath). It does not work immediately and will not stop an asthma attack once one has started, therefore it should not be used to relieve an asthma attack. If an attack occurs, use your quick-relief blue inhaler as prescribed by your doctor.
How to use Qvar 100 beclometasone inhaler
Read the Patient Information Leaflet before you start using this medication.
- Take the cover off the mouth piece.
- Breathe out as far as is comfortable and then immediately place the mouthpiece in your mouth and close your lips around it.
- Start to breathe in slowly and deeply through your mouth and press down on the canister inside the inhaler. This releases one puff of medicine. It is important that you carry on breathing in after the puff is released.
- Hold your breath for 10 seconds, then breathe out slowly. Repeat these steps again if your doctor has prescribed more than one puff.

Warnings
- Do not exceed the dose of this medicine that your doctor has prescribed for you.
- This medicine is known as a preventer and it should be taken regularly to prevent asthma attacks. It should not be used to relieve an asthma attack, as it will not work for this purpose. An asthma attack needs to be treated with a medicine that quickly opens the airways, such as salbutamol or terbutaline.
- You should not suddenly stop taking this medicine unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
- Inhalers may cause an unexpected increase in wheezing and difficulty breathing (paradoxical bronchospasm) straight after using them. If this happens, don't use the inhaler again, use your reliever inhaler to open your airways and consult your doctor immediately.
- Inhaled corticosteroids can sometimes cause a fungal infection in the mouth called oral thrush. To minimise the chances of this you should rinse your mouth with water or clean your teeth after inhaling each dose.
Do not take this medicine if:
- you are allergic to any ingredient in Qvar inhaler
- you are having an asthma attack
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
- This medicine should be used with caution during pregnancy.
- You should seek medical advice from your doctor before breastfeeding while using this medicine.
