Viagra could be used to treat rare childhood abnormality
26th January 2012
It appears the benefits of Viagra are continuing to increase for certain people. After we reported last month about the drug potentially being utilised as a treatment for those with diastolic heart failure: http://www.medical-specialists.co.uk/news/2011/12/30/viagra-found-to-soften-heart-muscles-and-benefit-those-with-diastolic-heart-failure/, it seems the drug can also benefit children with rare deformities known as ‘lymphangiomas’. These are difficult to treat malformations of the lymphatic system  and can lead to growths of fluids and vessels as large as a volleyball or basketball within children and babies. The growths can be serious and can occasionally block an airway pressuring an organ close by. Physicians at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital discovered the amazing and unexpected benefit whilst using a medication called ‘Revatio’ to treat pulmonrary hypertension, a rare condition that causes high blood pressure in the arteries that lead to the lungs. The baby girl who had the condition, unfortunately died after being severely ill, but it was discovered that the size of a lymphatic growth in her had been decreased. The drug was subsequently tested on two other children with similar problems and it was discovered that their growths had decreased in size too and were softer after 12 weeks. Revatio, also manufactured by Pfizer, is similar to Viagra and contains the same active ingredient (sildenafil). The Physicians at Lucile are working with experts from Stanford University School of Medicine to conduct further studies. However, There are some drawbacks. The treatment is very expensive, still in early stages of research, and may not totally eradicate a growth. However, it does have it’s benefits. Dr Alfred Lane, a professor of dermatology and pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine commented: “but if it can reduce it to the size that they can remove it, that would be good”. At Medical Specialists we offer Viagra from as little as £29.97 for 4 tablets. You can obtain this medication through a consultation with our in-house doctors or we can dispense the medication to you if you can supply a valid UK or European private prescription issued by your doctor, consultant or other medical practitioner.
