Pharmacists in Italy threaten to cut off the country’s supply of Viagra

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti’s new planned reforms have left many pharmacists furious, causing protest marches outside parliament in Rome. “No Viagra, no party!” was written on many of the banners seen at protests. The planned ‘economic liberalisation scheme’, would result in roughly 5,000 new pharmacies emerge and private pharmacists given preference for licenses. The government’s aim is to create competition in professions where before there was a stricter limit on the number of licenses issued.

Hospital pharmacists would be hit hard by this plan if it goes ahead, as they would now face massive competition. They are arguing it is unfair that private pharmacists are being given preference for new licenses. This has now culminated in a planned ‘Viagra strike’. Angry state-employed pharmacists are now considering a flat-out refusal to sell Viagra to anybody, beginning this month. Union official Loredana Vasselli, explained the reasoning behind this choice of drug: “it is a highly sought after drug whose absence does not put patients’ health at risk”.

Sales of Viagra within Italy have been steadily rising in recent years, with many taboos or embarrassments being wiped away over time and a change in attitude has been adopted amongst many Italian men. Despite the protests in Rome, most Italians seem to be in acceptance of Prime Minister Monti’s reforms and argue that they are vital for the country’s economic survival.
