What is Metrogel for?

Please note: Although you can buy Metrogel for rosacea, DO NOT use this product for dental abscesses or bacterial vaginosis.

Metrogel is a prescription-only antibacterial gel treatment used to help clear symptoms of the chronic skin disorder rosacea. It has been found to help sufferers decrease bothersome symptoms like redness, swelling and the pimples caused by the condition.

Its active ingredient is Metronidazole, a substance also contained in oral tablets for other types of bacterial infection like dental abscesses or bacterial vaginosis.

How does Metrogel work?

Metrogel is a powerful antibacterial gel that when applied twice daily directly to the affected skin, allows for the antimicrobial substance Metronidazole to target the bacteria responsible for the condition. Metrogel inhibits the growth of the bacteria that causes the irritation and inflammation.

By clearing the bacteria responsible for the problem, your skin and symptoms will improve over time.

How to use Metrogel

When you buy Metrogel online, you should read the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) before using the gel.

Referring to the PIL, you should apply Metrogel as directed. In most cases, this will be 2 administrations per day.

Before applying the gel, make sure the area is clean, then distribute a thin layer of Metrogel over the region of skin affected, rubbing it in.

According to the PIL, the average period of treatment with Metrogel is 3 to 4 months. However, the PIL also states that if a clear benefit has been demonstrated, continued therapy for a further 3 to 4 month period may be considered by the prescribing physician depending on the severity of the condition. If there is no clear clinical improvement, therapy should be stopped.

What are the possible side effects of Metrogel?

Side effects are rare, and most people don’t get any. Possible side effects may vary from one person to the next, as with any medication. You should always read the manufacturer’s Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) using this or any other medication.

This will give you important instructions on how and when to use the medication, as well as any possible side effects of the drug.
