What is Maxalt Melts for?

Maxalt Melts are prescribed in a strength of 10mg tablets only, with each tablet containing the active ingredient Rizatriptan. This belongs to a class of medicines called selective serotonin 5-HT1B/1D receptor agonists.

Maxalt Melt Tablets are used to effectively treat the headache phase of the attack in adults and therefore are not taken to prevent attacks. See Propranolol for prevention.

How does Maxalt Melts work?

Maxalt Melts contain Rizatriptan and are a quick-acting treatment that work by reducing swelling of blood vessels surrounding the brain; this swelling results in the headache pain of an attack. Maxalt Melt Tablets are designed to melt on the tongue in your saliva, so they can be taken immediately without the need of a drink of water. They may be particularly useful for people who feel sick or vomit during their attack and are unable to drink, and are ideal for people who can't swallow conventional tablets.

Rizatriptan is most effective taken at the onset of an attack. The medication is fast-acting and normally takes only 30 minutes to take effect. Rizatriptan is not guaranteed to work for everyone, and if this is the case, it may worth considering an alternative treatment such as Sumatriptan.

How to take Maxalt Melts

Maxalt Melts are used to treat attacks. Take a Maxalt Melt as soon as possible after your headache has started.

It is not a preventative - Do not use it to prevent an attack.

When you buy Maxalt Melts online, always take Maxalt Melt exactly as your doctor has told you, or as outline in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL). You should check with your doctor or your pharmacist if you are not sure.

The usual dose is 10mg.

If your symptoms return within 24 hours

In some patients, symptoms can return within a 24-hour period. If this occurs, you can take an additional dose of Maxalt Melt. You should always wait at least 2 hours between doses.

If after 2 hours you still have symptoms

If you do not respond to the first dose of Maxalt Melt during an attack, you should not take a second dose of Maxalt Melt for treatment of the same attack. It is still likely, however, that you will respond to Maxalt Melt during the next attack.

Do not take more than 2 doses of Maxalt Melt in a 24-hour period, (for example, do not take more than two 10mg oral lyophilisates or more than two 10mg tablets in a 24-hour period). You should always wait at least 2 hours between doses.

If your condition worsens, seek medical attention.

What are the possible side effects of Maxalt Melts?

Side effects are rare, and most people don’t get any. Possible side effects may vary from one person to the next, as with any medication. You should always read the manufacturer’s Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) before taking this or any other medication.
