What is Malarone for?

Malarone belongs to a group of medicines called antimalarials and it is a popular and effective medication used to prevent and treat the disease (although treating malaria itself should only be conducted with your doctor’s supervision). Other antimalarials may contain antibiotics, so Malarone is ideal if you do not, or cannot take such medications. How does Malarone work?

It contains two active ingredients, Atovaquone 250mg and Proguanil Hydrochloride 100mg. Malaria is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito, which passes the parasite (Plasmodium Falciparum) into the bloodstream. Malarone prevents the disease by killing this parasite. For people who are already infected, Malarone also kills these parasites.

How to take Malarone

1 tablet once a day, taken as below:

• Start taking Malarone 1 to 2 days before travelling.
• Continue taking it every day during your stay.
• Continue taking it for another 7 days after you return.
