Bimatoprost (sold under the brand name Lumigan) is a prostamide medicine prescribed for the treatment of high pressure inside the eye (ocular hypertension) and glaucoma. Lumigan occasionally may also be used for other conditions/purposes as determined by your GP or other healthcare provider.

What is Lumigan for?
The medication is only licenced by the manufacturer for the following conditions:
. Ocular hypertension
. Open-angle Glaucoma
How does Lumigan work?
Lumigan is in a group of medicines called prostaglandin analogues. People with glaucoma or ocular hypertension have high intraocular pressure (IOP), or high pressure inside the eye. Raised IOP then increases the risk of vision loss, in addition to optic nerve damage in the eye. Lumigan works by helping the fluid in the eye drain out, which helps decrease IOP.
Lumigan will obviously work differently when used for other purposes besides hypertension and glaucoma. This would need to be discussed between you and your GP/healthcare provider first to determine if the medication is suitable for you for an unlicensed use.
How long does Lumigan take to work?
This is something that can vary between patients and we would strongly advise discussing this with your own GP or other appropriate healthcare professional, as well as conducting thorough research online before use.
How to use Lumigan
The recommended dose for these licenced conditions (Ocular hypertension and Open-angle Glaucoma) is one drop once daily, in the evening, once daily in each eye that needs treatment.
For treatment of purposes not listed above, how to apply the medicine will be different as you will not be applying it into the eyeball. Always speak to your own GP or healthcare provider if you are unsure how to use Lumigan for other uses not stated above.
What are the possible side effects of Lumigan?
IF YOU HAVE ASTHMA: Lumigan is known as a ‘prostaglandin analogue’ . If you have any issues with your breathing and/or asthma medication, you are to stop using Lumigan and speak to your doctor.
Side effects are rare, and most people don’t get any. Possible side effects may vary from one person to the next, as with any medication. You should always read the manufacturer’s Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) before using this or any other medication. This will give you important information, as well as any possible side effects of the drug.
As mentioned previously, this medication is supplied off-label (unlicensed), so together with the medication, we will provide a Medical Specialists® leaflet with guidance for its off-label use.
