Genital Herpes Treatment
Genital herpes is an embarrassing condition which most people find difficult to discuss with their own doctor. It is an infection of the genitals (penis in men, vulva and vagina in women) and surrounding area of skin. Herpes is caused by the simplex virus (HSV) type 1 or type 2.
Herpes virus causes painful blisters to appear on the genitals and the surrounding areas. It can affect any mucous membrane (moist lining), for example those found in the mouth, eyes, anal or vaginal areas. The buttocks and anus may also be affected.
Genital herpes is usually passed on by skin to skin contact (sexual act) with someone who is already infected with the virus. Once someone has been exposed to HSV, the virus remains dormant (inactive) most of the time. At least 8 out of 10 people who carry the virus are unaware that they have been infected because there are often few or no initial symptoms. However, certain triggers such as stress, anxiety, heat, fatigue etc can activate the virus, causing an outbreak of genital herpes.
These are usually caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) through close contact e.g. kissing someone who has a cold sore. Sometimes cold sores are caused by herpes virus type 2 (HSV-2) as a result of having oral sex with someone who has genital herpes. Cold sores appear with a tingling/itchy sensation, and if left untreated lead to blisters. The blisters can burst leaving raw infectious areas, which can leave scars or tissue damage to the lips. It is not recommended to kiss someone while cold sores are present on the lips.
Shingles (also known as herpes zoster), is a skin rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. This virus is called the varicella zoster virus (VZV) and belongs to the herpes family of viruses. After an individual has chickenpox, this virus lives dormant in the nervous system and is never fully cleared from the body. Under certain circumstances, such as emotional stress, immune deficiency (from AIDS or chemotherapy), or with cancer, the virus reactivates and causes shingles.
Shingles rash starts as small blisters on a red base, with new blisters continuing to form for three to five days. The areas that are typically affected are the head, abdomen, neck, face and arm or leg. In rare cases, areas of the face like the nose and eyes may also be affected. Shingles can be spread from an affected person to babies, children, or adults who have not had chickenpox. Instead of developing shingles, these people develop chickenpox.
Aciclovir cream is commonly used to treat cold sores. It is an anti viral cream that works by preventing the virus that causes outbreaks of cold sores from multiplying. Aciclovir cream is best used at the first tingling signs of the cold sore, this can help reduce the time of the outbreak and blistering.
Aciclovir cream can also used to treat genital herpes, shingles and chickenpox. It should be applied to the affected area five times daily at intervals of approximately four hours.
