What is Eumovate for?

Please note: You can buy Eumovate Cream or Ointment online from Medical Specialists® for mild to moderate cases of skin problems eczema or psoriasis. Please speak to your GP or dermatologist before you order Eumovate if you’re uncertain.

Please note: Speak to your doctor or pharmacist first before applying Eumovate to thin skin such as the face, as thinner areas of skin may absorb larger amounts of the medicine.

Eumovate is a ‘moderately potent’ corticosteroid medication available to order online as a cream or ointment. It is prescribed for treatment skin disorders such as eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis. The treatment can be used a ‘step down’ when other stronger medicines are no longer necessary.

Like other popular medicines for skin complaints, Eumovate is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline and is available to buy in 30g or 100g tubes.

What is the Difference between Eumovate Cream and Ointment?

Creams are generally less greasy than ointments, but have less of a moisturising effect when applied. Ointments are thicker and greasier than creams. Therefore, Eumovate Cream is usually applied to areas of moist or weeping skin, whilst the ointment is often used for scaly, dry or flakey skin.

How does Eumovate work?

Eumovate Cream and Ointment contains the active ingredient Clobetasone Butyrate (0.05% w/w), a topical medicine which provides relief from irritation and inflammation associated with flare-ups of your condition.

The steroid in Eumovate works by preventing the skin’s reaction and release of chemicals once it has come into contact with an allergen. An allergic reaction or over-sensitivity of the skin is primarily the cause of inflammation.

However, the medication will target inside the skin calls, stopping the release of certain chemicals. This reduces redness, swelling and itching, thereby causing you to scratch less (scratching can cause further irritation).

How to use Eumovate

When you buy Eumovate Cream/Ointment online, use the treatment as advised by your doctor and in accordance with the manufacturer’s Patient Information Leaflet (PIL). Speak to your doctor if you are uncertain about anything.

Eumovate Cream or Ointment should be applied to the affected area(s) of your skin up to 2 times daily. You only need to use a thin layer of the medicine and make sure to wash your hands after use (unless you are using Eumovate to treat symptoms on the hands).

You should not use Eumovate on large areas of the body for a long time (e.g. every day for many weeks or months) - unless your doctor has told you to do so.  Detailed instructions of use for different bodily areas is included in the PIL.

Moreover, don’t use Eumovate at the same time as other creams or ointments such as a moisturiser. Wait at least 30 minutes between using Eumovate and any other product.

Please note: The PIL states that if your skin problem does not improve within 4 weeks, talk to your doctor.
