What is Elocon for?
Please note: You can buy Elocon Cream or Ointment online from Medical Specialists® for severe forms of eczema or psoriasis.
Please note: Before using this as the first/initial treatment for your symptoms, you should speak to your doctor first as a milder treatment may be more suitable.
Elocon is referred to as a ‘potent’ topically-applied corticosteroid that is prescribed for severe forms of skin problems.
The branded Elocon is manufactured by the reputable pharmaceutical company Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) and you can order Elocon without prescription in 30g or 100g tubes, as cream or ointment.
What is the Difference between Elocon Cream and Ointment?
When deciding between Elocon Cream vs. Elocon Ointment for eczema/psoriasis, the main factor will likely be if your skin is dry and scaly, or moist and weepy.
The cream is best suited for moist and weepy skin whereas the ointment is greasier in texture, making it great for skin that is dry and scaly. It is always best speaking to your own doctor first if you’re unsure which is right for you.
How does Elocon work?
Elocon contains the powerful and effective steroid Mometasone Furoate 0.1% w/w.
The medication is used to alleviate itchiness and redness of the skin caused by the inflammation.
Inflammation occurs when an allergic reaction or irritation of the skin results in chemicals to be released in the skin which cause widening of blood vessels, and the affected area of the skin becomes red, itchy and swollen, causing you to scratch.
However, the steroid enters skin cells and works by inhibiting the release of the inflammatory substances, causing your symptoms to subside.
How to use Elocon
Always use the medication as directed by your doctor and the manufacturer’s Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) when you buy Elocon Cream or Ointment online.
When using Elocon, usually a thin layer of the medication is gently rubbed into the affected area(s) once each day. Do not use Elocon on any open sores or infected areas of skin.
Continue to use Elocon until the flare-up of your symptoms has gone, and then stop using the medication. Usually, a course of treatment for 7 to 14 days will suffice. However, you should speak to your doctor for further advice after this time if your symptoms haven’t improved or have worsened.
You should not use a large amount of cream or ointment on large areas of the body for a long time (for example every day for many weeks or months).
What are the possible side effects of Elocon?
Side effects are rare, and most people don’t get any. Possible side effects may vary from one person to the next, as with any medication. You should always read the manufacturer’s Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) before using or any other medication.
This will give you important instructions on how and when to use the medication, as well as any possible side effects of the drug.
