What is Colofac for?

Colofac is predominantly a prescription IBS treatment however may sometimes also be used in the treatment of colon spasms, chronic irritable colon, constipation related to spasms and mucous colitis.

However, you can only buy Colofac online for IBS from Medical Specialists® and we do not prescribe it for other health conditions (you would need to see your own doctor to request this for anything other than IBS).

Colofac is a particularly well-tolerated medicine and is prescribed by GP’s all around the country as a safe and effective way at relieving uncomfortable symptoms like constipation, diarrhoea, stomach pain and flatulence (excessive wind).

How does Colofac work?

Colofac contains Mebeverine Hydrochloride, an effective antispasmodic. It works by helping to relax the muscle walls of the intestines and gut.

When you have IBS, these muscles often over-contract and spasm when working to help in the digestion of food, in addition to the absorption of food and water.

However, Colofac’s active ingredient binds to the muscarinic receptors on the muscles, inhibiting certain chemicals from causing problems in the intestine.

With a relaxed bowel, the medicine helps to relieve abdominal pain, excessive wind, and other troublesome symptoms of IBS.

How to take Colofac

When you buy Colofac tablets or capsules online for IBS, please read the Patient Information Leaflet provided with the medicine, as each version of Colofac has a slightly different dosage recommended by the manufacturer.

However, for both the 100mg and 200mg versions of Colofac, you should take one dose around 20 minutes prior to a meal.

You should also swallow the tablet or capsule whole with water and do not chew.

If you forget to take a dose, do not worry, just take the next dose as normal. Do not take 2 doses simultaneously if you forget to take your normal dose.

DOSAGE:

Colofac 100mg instant release tablets:

Take 1 tablet 3 times a day as instructed in the manufacturer’s Information Leaflet, or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist, preferably 20 minutes before meals.

Colofac 200mg MR capsules:

Colofac MR capsules have a different dose than the lower strength 100mg tablets as the active ingredient is released slowly and over time. Therefore, you should take 1 capsule 2 times a day, or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist, preferably 20 minutes before meals.

What are the possible side effects of Colofac?

Side effects are rare, and most people don’t get any. Possible side effects may vary from one person to the next with any medication. You should always read the manufacturer’s Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) before taking this or any other medication.

This will give you important instructions on how and when to take the medication, as well as any possible side effects of the drug.
