What is Canestest?
Canestest is a revolutionary new self-testing kit for women experiencing symptoms of a vaginal infection, and are unsure which one they may have. Developed by the pharmaceutical company Bayer who are behind thrush treatment Canesten Oral & Cream Duo, Canestest is incredibly easy to use. The test simply involves a swab that will quickly highlight any abnormal vaginal pH levels. Test results can be used in conjunction with current symptoms being experienced, and compared against those symptoms displayed on the back of the packaging in order to ascertain the vaginal infection that could be present, such as Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) or Thrush.
How does Canestest work?
Bacteria is present within the vagina and is there to protect it. The ‘good’ lactobacilli vaginal bacteria work at maintaining an even level of the vagina's pH balance (how acidic the vagina is). This helps to keep a healthy balance of bacteria. If the pH level of the vagina increases beyond 4.5, this means it is less acidic and bad bacteria can multiply, causing infections such as BV or Thrush. Canestest will not only tell you if there has been an increase in the pH level, but it will also indicate which condition is likely present. A more normal reading could indicate Thrush, whilst a higher reading would suggest BV.
Why choose Canestest?
Canestest has been clinically proven to deliver results at more than 90% in accuracy. The self-test kit can be used in the comfort and privacy of your own home and is a highly convenient product that gives women a rapid and efficient method of finding out which condition is most likely responsible for the symptoms they are experiencing. If the swab indicates an infection is present, take a clear picture of the positive result and attach this to an email explaining your symptoms, and send to Medical Specialists® Pharmacy at: [email protected]. We can then advise on suitable treatment options such as Canesten Oral & Cream Duo for thrush, or Metronidazole for Bacterial Vaginosis.
How to use Canestest
Similar to inserting a tampon, Canestest is easy to use and shouldn’t cause any feelings of pain or discomfort in the vagina. In order to achieve the most accurate results, you need to wait at least a full day before or after your period before using Canestest. This timeframe again applies if you experience any signs of your period or vaginal bleeding. You must also wait 12 hours before using the test following sexual intercourse or vaginal douching.
1. Unwrap the Canestest swab. It is vital the swab tip does not come into contact with anything before you insert it into your vagina.

2. Holding the Canestest swab by the handle, insert the yellow tip into your vagina and rotate the swab before removing it.
3. Wait 10 seconds and then check the tip of the swab to see if the colour has remained the same or changed to blue or green:
If the swab didn’t change colour after the 10 seconds, this means you could be suffering from thrush (check the back of the packaging to compare symptoms and interpret results).
If the swab changed colour and the tip becomes blue or green, this means you could be suffering with a BV infection (check the back of the packaging to compare symptoms and interpret results).
