Extra weight may damage your back

A study published in the new issue of the journal ‘Arthiritis & Rheumatism’, has indicated that overweight and obese adults face a much high risk of developing lumbar spine disc degeneration in comparison to those with a more normal and healthy body mass index (BMI).

It is estimated that at least 30% of people aged 30-50 years old have some degree of disc space degeneration, although not all of these people will experience pain or even receive any official diagnosis. Patients diagnosed with the condition will usually find themselves to have an incessant but bearable pain that will occasionally flare up for a few days or more. Symptoms may vary, but the general characteristics include: pain experienced through bending, twisting, and lifting, pain centred on the lower back that can expand to the hips and legs, and inflammation as the proteins in the disc space irritate the surrounding nerves.

The new study was conducted at the University of Hong Kong and comprised of more than 1,000 men and almost 1,600 women from Southern China. All participants were aged over 21 and were accredited with Asian-remodelled BMI categories and then examined by using sagittal T2-weighed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the lumbar spine.

It was discovered that 73 percent of the subjects had lumbar disc degeneration, with 76 percent of the male subjects found to have it compared to 71 percent of the females involved in the study. Researchers also noted that 7 percent of all the participants were underweight, 48 percent were in a normal weight range, 36 percent were overweight, and 9 percent were obese.

“Our research confirms that with elevated BMI there is a significant increase in the extent and global severity of disc degeneration. In fact, end-stage disc degeneration with narrowing of the disc space was more pronounced in obese individuals,” Dr. Dino Samartzis, of the University of Hong Kong, said in a journal news release.

The study also noted that as people gain weight, disc degeneration may begin to occur due to physical loading on the disc, the study authors suggested. In addition, fat cells may play a role by causing chronic low-grade inflammation.

“Since overweight and obesity are worldwide concerns whose prevalence continues to rise, our study’s findings have considerable public health implications. If these issues continue to plague society, they can further affect spine health leading to low back pain and its consequences,” Samartzis said.

If you would are overweight or obese and are worried about any potential back pain that this may cause you, Xenical and Alli may help you to lose weight and decrease the risk of lumbar disc degeneration from occuring. Xenical is a clinically proven and prescription only slimming medication. It works in the digestive system, blocking roughly one-third of the fat in the food you eat from being digested and absorbed by your body. Alli is a slightly weaker version of Xenical and can be purchased from our chemist shop without a prescription, the only FDA approved medication of it’s kind.

Faulty heart medication causes 100 deaths in Pakistan

A Manufacturing facility in Punjab, Pakistan has been closed indefinitely after being linked to the death of dozens of people who are all believed to have taken tainted heart medication. Authorities now state the death toll has reached 100, with a further 300 currently hospitalised in the city of Lahore.

Reports suggest that the medicines were unauthentic, of poor quality, and some even past their dates of expiration. It has been speculated that the deaths could be due to a metal contamination of cardiovascular medication made at the unnamed facility.

Police officials arrested the owners of three pharmaceutical companies that are suspected of administering medicine to the state-run Punjab Istitute of Cardiology, who then provided the heart medication to patients free of cost.

Health officials have stated that those patients who had taken the heart medication arrived at the hospital with a severe decline in white blood cells, platelets, and damage to bone marrow. Punjab’s Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has pledged stern action against anybody found responsible for the inadequate and faulty drugs.

Drug pushers in Nigeria may receive automatic life sentence

According to an article published in the “Tribune” newspaper, the Nigerian government are planning to impose a compulsory life prison sentence for those manufacturers and importers who are found to be guilty of medicines counterfeiting.

The Director General of the National Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dr Paul Orhii was speaking to newsmen in Abuja, Nigeria, and said “We looked back at the Nigerian law, it turned out that, paradoxically, we are the most lenient when it comes to punishing of offenders even though we are the most hit. We are the major victim of fake drugs because it is shipped here because we manufacture almost nothing. More than 70 percent of the medicines consumed in Nigeria are imported from different countries including China and India . So, we looked back at our system and we discovered that our current law for punishment for manufacturing of fake dugs is just 15 years jail term and the alternative is just N500, 000:00-fine.”

He further went on to add “Besides, we have never been able to secure the maximum penalty of 15 years jail term; but we are asking to review the current law to give stiffer penalty to show the world and also our people that we are very serious about fighting this problem of counterfeit medicines which have dire consequences on the population both from economic and public health perspectives.”

This follows the tireless work of previous Director General of NAFDAC, Dora Akunyili, who assumed office in 2001 and quickly achieved a celebrity status in Nigeria because of her tough stand against corruption. Prior to Akunyili taking charge of NAFDAC, staff were found to be violating their position in order to extort money from honest, genuine manufacturers, whilst simultaneously accepting bribes from counterfeiters in return for access to the Nigerian medicines market. After Akunyili’s rise to Director General, the agency started to broadcast songs on radio and television to increase public awareness of the dangers of counterfeit drugs, and to encourage them to report any potentially suspicious looking drugs.
