If I Had Acne in Middle Age

“Adult acne” is a term which most of us will not have heard many times. However it is more common than you may think, with women suffering from it in particular.
Dr. Amy Taub, MD, Assistant Professor of Clinical Dermatology at Northwestern University School of Medicine has released a video short titled “If I Had Acne in Middle Age”, with its premise being how a Dermatologist would cure their own adult acne.

Unfortunately for sufferers of acne, using those supermarket bought products you tried back when you were a teenager such as Clearasil and Freederm isn’t always the best solution. Instead Dr Taub suggests in the video to try medication such as Spironolactone and photodynamic therapy.

Dr Taub goes on to mention that acne in women is usually inflammatory nodules and cysts, primarily around the jaw line, chin and neck. Although it maybe frustrating for adults to suffer from acne, after probably thinking they left this behind in their teens, you can take heart in knowing you are not alone and there are treatments available to help.

One of the most effective treatments is Spironolactone, which Dr Taub recommends in her video. Spironolactone limits hormonal fluctuations that may contribute to acne breakouts. Hormones, specifically androgens, have been linked to the development of acne. In addition Dianette is another highly effective medication for acne, particularly where the acne is quite severe as it reduces excessive grease production in your skin. It is usually taken for 12 or more months for acne treatment In addition, this drug is also effective for moderately severe hirsutism.

Why not undergo our quick and simple online consultation at www.medical-specialists.co.uk and one of our Doctors will decide if you are medically suited for your required medication. Prices start from as little as £39.95 (3 months Dianette – 63 tablets) & £85.00 for 3 months Spironolactone (84 x 100mg tablets)

Staying sexually active Later on in Life

Many people later on in life are still remaining sexually active and consider sexuality an important part of their lives. But with age, sexually activity also can be challenging.

For men and women, medical conditions that affect general health and well-being can interfere with sexuality, but these can all increase with age.

Diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol can affect the cardiovascular system, and adequate blood circulation figures strongly in arousal during sexual activities.

Conditions affecting joint health, such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, may impair movement or cause pain. A decrease in sexual drive (libido) is common in older adults.

For men, testosterone levels gradually decrease over time, meaning erections may take longer to achieve and may not be as firm. Erectile dysfunction becomes more common as men age.

But the desire for emotional intimacy defies age; the focus on a physical relationship can shift increasingly to an emotional one. This change tends to bring older adults together for satisfying sexual intimacy even if arousal and orgasm aren’t the same as they once were. While the clock can’t be turned back, here are a few ways to enhance sexual experiences later in life:

Communication: Partners need to talk openly about any physical difficulties as well as changes in sexual function or sexual enjoyment.

Options: Drugs such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra are available to treat erectile dysfunction. However, they don’t affect libido.

Exercise: Regular exercise can improve energy levels and also helps stimulate blood flow to the genitals.

Nepal court to rule on ‘Himalayan Viagra’ murders

A court in Nepal was Wednesday due to give its verdict in the case of 36 villagers charged with a series of gruesome murders in a battle over a highly prized plant dubbed the “Himalayan Viagra“.

The defendants make up nearly all the male population of the tiny village of Nar, 4,000 metres (13,000 feet) high in the Himalayas, where the bodies of seven men who disappeared after going to hunt for the plant were found in 2009.

The 36 all deny murder and say the victims, who were from outside the village, died accidentally when a fight broke out over the right to hunt for the rare parasitic plant, Yarchagumba.

The yellowy-brown fungus, which grows on the larva of a species of moth, is found in only a few parts of the Himalayas and the Tibetan plateau above 3,500 metres.

Known for its aphrodisiac qualities, Yarchagumba attracts a high price on the international market and is in particular demand in China, where a kilogram can fetch tens of thousands of dollars.

Euro MEP’s can claim for erectile dysfunction drugs free

EURO MEPs can claim for Viagra on their health insurance – and the bill, the taxpayer has to pick up.

All Brussels officials and politicians can get the erectile dysfunction medication for free if needed and they can even claim for methadone under the European Commission scheme.

Other free options include penis implants, the UK Independence Party discovered.

Marta Andreasen, an MEP for the party, said: “It is utterly bonkers what British taxpayers are funding for Eurocrats.

“Surely if they want these things, they should be able to pay themselves. It is a total waste of taxpayers’ cash.”

Official guidelines for claims reads: “Treatments with Viagra will from now on be reimbursable.”

The document also says the cost of drugs used during withdrawal treatment for addicts should be reimbursed in full.

It adds: “These products qualify for a special reimbursement at the rate of 100 per cent for a maximum of six months.”

Last year it was revealed MEPs receive public funding for massages and feng shui. Other perks which qualify include mud baths, hydromassage and mild electric shock treatment.

The TaxPayers’ Alliance last night blasted the wasteful perks in Brussels. Spokesman Matthew Sinclair said: “Taxpayers expect to see their money spent on providing essential services, not Viagra. The Government should insist on a better deal from Brussels.”

Staffordshire woman sentenced for selling counterfeit medicines

30 March 2010

A 51-year-old woman was sentenced to eight months in prison at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court for the possession of controlled drugs with the intent to supply, and for the possession of medicines with the intent to place them on the market without a licence.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) began their investigation in January 2008 into a website called www.pharma2u.com. The website advertised the sale of branded Prescription Only Medicines, such as Viagra. The products were posted from Southern Cyprus. Tests carried out as part of the investigation found these medicines to be counterfeit.

Operation Lauren was a joint investigation by MHRA investigators and Staffordshire Police. They visited five addresses in March 2009; three residential and two commercial. Small recoveries were made from the business addresses, and seizures were made at Ms Ruutel-Glykys home address; Forest Court, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. This address proved to be the UK distribution centre for the website pharma2u.

The operation seized a range of computers, stationery, a cash card machine and a total of 65,000 drugs and Prescription Only Medicines. A Canadian/Cypriot woman, Norma Ene Ruutel-Glykys, was arrested and later released on bail.

In September 2009, Ms Ruutel-Glykys was charged, and she later pleaded guilty at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on 15 February 2010.

MHRA Head of Enforcement Mick Deats said that people just don’t know what they’re taking if buying their medicines from illicit websites; the dosages could be either too high or too low, the product could contain no active pharmaceutical ingredient; or it could be a totally different ingredient to the one stated.

“Illegal suppliers do not care about quality control or standards, and people who purchase their medicine from these websites will never know where the product has originated from or what it might contain.

“People running these websites are not healthcare professionals; in fact, they are not professional in any way shape or form. They’re simply financially motivated criminals making a living at the expense of people’s health.

“If you feel that your medicine may be counterfeit, contact the MHRA’s dedicated 24 hour anti-counterfeiting hotline on 020 7084 2701 or by email tocounterfeit@mhra.gsi.gov.uk.”

Sick kids could soon be taking Viagra

US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer is seeking approval to sell a children’s form of Viagra to treat a rare lung disorder as a humanitarian gesture – in exchange for getting a six-month extension of its patent on the adult version.

The US Food and Drug Administration approached Pfizer about using its drug to treat a lung ailment that affects about 600 children a year, the New York Post report.

Viagra, which modifies blood flows, could reduce unusually high blood pressure in a child’s lungs, or pulmonary arterial hypertension. Symptoms include dizziness, chest pain and fatigue.

A panel of FDA advisers will determine tomorrow whether to approve the children’s version.

If Pfizer’s drug meets FDA requirements for children’s treatment, Pfizer would get an extra six months of exclusive Viagra sales without generic competition. Viagra sales in 2009 were $1.89 billion. Its patents expire in 2012.

Doctors already had been using Viagra’s principal ingredient in lower doses to treat children with the lung ailment, under a different name, Revatio. The principal drug for both Viagra and the softer sounding Revatio is the same, Sildenafil.

The FDA began asking Pfizer in 2001 to develop ways to use Viagra to treat children suffering from the lung ailment, but the pool of just 600 patients offered limited revenue opportunities.

A golden pestle used for Roman Viagra has been found in a Cornish field

A golden pestle which could have been used to mix ‘Roman Viagra‘ has been found in Cornwall.

The rare item could have been used as a portable pestle for crushing love potions, and also serve as a fertility and status symbol, hung around the neck of its owner.

The pendant,  which is less than an inch-and-a-half long and weighs just a fifth of an ounce, is shaped provocatively like a bull’s horns.

The gold pendant  was most likely part of the vanity set of a Romano-British noble, some time between the first and fourth century, say experts.
