Influenza and Swine Flu

In an ideal world we would all have perfect health; we wouldn't smoke, have high cholesterol, heart problems, arthritis, or suffer from colds and flu. Medical Specialists does not profess to offer you an ideal world, but are able to supply therapy such as Champix to help you quit smoking, Tamiflu to help protect you from Influenza and Lipitor and Crestor to lower your cholesterol.

Smoking Facts & Champix

Over one hundred thousand people in the UK die each year due to smoking. Smoking-related deaths are mainly due to cancers, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and heart disease.

Smoking increases the risk of developing a number of other diseases. Many of these may not be fatal, but they can cause years of unpleasant symptoms. Quit smoking today with the help of Champix. The Doctors at Medical Specialists can help you do this. Complete the simple 4 step online questionnaire, and if the online consultation is approved by one of our Doctors, they will write a prescription that will be dispensed by our in-house pharmacy team.

Champix

Champix (smoking cessation)

Champix by Pfizer contains varenicline, which is a non-nicotine prescription medicine, which when taken orally once or twice a day can help you stop smoking. After taking Champix the craving and withdrawal symptoms normally associated with stopping smoking are considerably reduced, making it easier to quit smoking. We do not recommend you smoke whilst taking a course of Champix, but if you do Champix can reduce the enjoyment of cigarettes when on treatment.

Before you buy Champix please visit www.champix.co.uk for more information and a list of possible side effects.

Herpes (Cold Sores, Shingles and Genital Herpes)

Cold Sores

These are usually caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) through close contact with someone who has a cold sore. Sometimes cold sores are caused by herpes virus type 2 (HSV-2) as a result of having oral sex with someone who has genital herpes. Cold sores appear with a tingling/itchy sensation, and if left untreated lead to blisters. The blisters can burst leaving raw infectious areas, which can leave scars or tissue damage to the lips.

Shingles

Shingles (also known as herpes zoster), is a skin rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. This virus is called the varicella zoster virus (VZV) and belongs to the herpes family of viruses. After an individual has chickenpox, this virus lives dormant in the nervous system and is never fully cleared from the body. Under certain circumstances, such as emotional stress, immune deficiency (from AIDS or chemotherapy), or with cancer, the virus reactivates and causes shingles.

Shingles rash starts as small blisters on a red base, with new blisters continuing to form for three to five days. The areas that are typically affected are the head, abdomen, neck, face and arm or leg. In rare cases, areas of the face like the nose and eyes may also be affected. Shingles can be spread from an affected person to babies, children, or adults who have not had chickenpox. Instead of developing shingles, these people develop chickenpox.

Genital Herpes

Genital herpes is an infection of the genitals (penis in men, vulva and vagina in women) and surrounding area of skin. Herpes is caused by the simplex virus (HSV) type 1 or type 2.

Herpes virus causes painful blisters to appear on the genitals and the surrounding areas. It can affect any mucous membrane (moist lining), for example those found in the mouth, eyes, anal or vaginal areas. The buttocks and anus may also be affected.

Genital herpes is usually passed on by skin to skin contact with someone who is already infected with the virus. Once someone has been exposed to HSV, the virus remains dormant (inactive) most of the time. At least 8 out of 10 people who carry the virus are unaware that they have been infected because there are often few or no initial symptoms. However, certain triggers can activate the virus, causing an outbreak of genital herpes.

Tamiflu

Valtrex 500mg tablets

Valtrex is an antiviral drug. It slows the growth and spread of the herpes virus so that the body can fight off the infection. It is a prescription medication licensed to treat several conditions related to infections with the herpes virus, such as genital herpes, cold sores and shingles.

Cholesterol Facts and Lipid Lowering Agents (Statins)

The average cholesterol reading in the UK is 5.8 mmol/l, which is virtually, double that of the East (e.g. China), and some people have much higher readings. The higher your cholesterol level, the higher your risk of stroke or heart disease and therefore the overall risk of having a heart attack. It is now well documented that a high level of cholesterol is one of the most important risk factors for coronary heart disease. There is now therapy available (statins) that can lower your LDL-cholesterol (bad factor) by more than 20% and raise your HDL-cholesterol (protection factor), thereby reducing your coronary heart disease (CHD) risk factor and risk of stroke greatly. There are a number of proven therapies available. Overall, this therapy can reduce the risk of stroke or from dying from CHD by around 25%. For people in their 70s, this therapy is as effective as it is in middle-aged people.

Lipitor

Lipitor

Lipitor (atorvastatin) is a cholesterol-lowering agent (statin), and should be used in conjunction with a low fat diet. It raises good/protective cholesterol (HDL) and lowers bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides. 77% of patients should reach their ideal levels by using this therapy. It is used to reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack, especially when their hsCRP level is high. This is a sign of inflammation and, when elevated, can be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events.

Crestor

Crestor

Crestor (rosuvastatin) is prescribed along with a low fat diet to lower high cholesterol, and to slow the build up of plaque in arteries as part of a treatment plan to lower cholesterol to goal. Crestor, like Lipitor, is a very affective statin. In a clinical trial of 17,000 people, Crestor was proven to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in men 50 years and older and women 60 years and older with an elevated hsCRP level (2 mg/L or higher) plus at least one additional risk factor (such as high blood pressure, low HDL "good" cholesterol, smoking, or family history of early heart disease). Crestor raises HDL and lowers both LDL and triglycerides.

Influenza, Swine Flu Facts and Tamiflu

Influenza, commonly known as flu, is an infectious viral disease passed from one person to another through the air. It often breaks out as an epidemic. Typically, an area can have epidemic conditions for a period of four to six weeks before it eases off. Influenza spreads around the world in seasonal epidemics, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands annually and millions in pandemic years. Three influenza pandemics occurred in the 20th century and killed tens of millions of people, with each of these pandemics being caused by the appearance of a new strain of the virus in humans. Often, these new strains appear when an existing flu virus spreads to humans from other animal species, or when an existing human strain picks up new genes from a virus that usually infects birds or pigs.

The disease infects the nose, throat or lungs, and usually lasts three to five days. Influenza can be dangerous to the elderly, especially those who live in residential homes where there is more risk of contracting the virus through contact with others. People with lung and heart diseases are also more likely to develop complications due to an attack of flu. Those at risk are advised to get a yearly vaccination. Consult your doctor if you have any problems or questions.

The most common symptoms of the disease are chills, fever, sore throat, muscle pains, severe headache, coughing, weakness and general discomfort. Fever and coughs are the most frequent symptoms. Consult your Doctor if it goes on for more than a week or if the symptoms are very severe.

Swine Flu

Swine flu is spreading rapidly across the world since emerging in Mexico and is now officially the first flu pandemic for 40 years.

Swine influenza (also called H1N1 flu) is an infection caused by a strain of the influenza type A virus known as H1N1. It can be spread from person to person by coughing and sneezing. Symptoms of swine flu in humans appear to be similar to those produced by standard, seasonal flu. Fever is the key symptom, combined with cough, sore throat, body aches, chills and aching limbs. Some people with the virus have also reported nausea and diarrhoea.

Tamiflu

Tamiflu

Tamiflu is a medicine to treat flu. Tamiflu attacks the influenza virus and prevent it from spreading inside your body. The active ingredient in Tamiflu is oseltamivir, which is currently the best known protection against an attack of the flu virus. With Tamiflu treatment, the body's immune system becomes capable of taking command and attacking the virus to provide a shorter illness period and milder disease symptoms.
