What is Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) also known as male impotence is the repeated inability to maintain a firm and hard erection long enough to have sex satisfactorily. Erectile Dysfunction can occur at any age although it is more common in older men. Problems with erections may stem from chronic illnesses, drugs, less blood flow to the penis, drinking too much alcohol and smoking, or being too tired or stressed.

Any problem with the sequence of events that leads to an erection can contribute to ED (male impotence). The sequence of an erection process involves nerve impulses in the brain, spine, and penis as well as the response in the muscles, fibrous tissues, veins and arteries.

Health conditions can be of four types i.e. vasculogenic, neurogenic, hormonal or anatomical. These health conditions can affect flow of blood, nervous system, hormone levels or the physical structure of the penis.

Psychological factors such as anxiety, fear, depression, and attitude to sex can also lead to Erectile Dysfunction. Experts believe that psychological factors such as depression, stress, anxiety, guilt, low self-esteem, and fear of sexual failure are responsible for 10 to 20 percent of ED cases. Normally a psychological factor is also linked to an underlying physical cause however in some cases, the psychological effects of ED may come through bad sexual experiences.

All men at some point in their life will experience ED. You should seek medical advice if ED is persistently causing you self esteem problems or relationship difficulties. Whatever the reasons maybe, ED (male impotence) can be treated now.
