What is ED (Erectile Dysfunction)?
Erectile Dysfunction is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual activity. In some cases of male impotence, the penis becomes partly erect, but not hard enough to have sex properly. In some cases, there is no swelling or fullness of the penis at all thus no erection. Erectile Dysfunction (male impotence) is a long-term medical problem. Although most men will experience male impotence a few times during their life, if it persistently reoccurs then it needs proper diagnosis and treatment and medical advice should be sought. ED treatment depends on the underlying causes.
How common is ED?
Erectile Dysfunction is very common and it can occur at any age although it tends to be more common in those over 40 years of age, but becomes more common with increasing age. About half of men between the age of 40 and 70 have ED. About 7 in 10 men aged 70 and above have ED. 65% by age of 70 years in the UK experience Erectile Dysfunction.
Is ED a result of ageing?
Although there is a higher rate of male impotence among older men but it is mainly because of health conditions such as vascular disease, Diabetes or side effects of the medications for these conditions. Young males can also experience ED.
What are the causes of ED?
ED or male impotence can result from a number of factors e.g. psychological factors such as performance anxiety, stress, relationship difficulties, medical and physical causes like reduced blood flow to the penis, Multiple Sclerosis, stroke, Diabetes, fractured pelvis, radiotherapy to the genital area, use of some antidepressants, alcohol and drug abuse. Does ED affect a man's health?
Erectile Dysfunction can lead to depression, poor self-image, and loss of self-confidence. If left undiagnosed or not treated, ed can lead to serious relationship difficulties. ED can also be an indication of an underlying disease such as Diabetes, heart problems etc. If you experence ED, it is best to see your GP. They can discuss the problem, go over any medication you may be taking, and do a physical examination. This can help to identify, or rule out, possible underlying causes.
Are there any treatments available for ED?
There are many treatment options available now.
